micromanagement. You’ll drive them crazy, or you’ll drive them away. Create a working environment that allows them lots of autonomy and flexibility. Turn them loose to do what they do best.

• Focus on the contributions your peacocks make, and learn to ignore or overlook their eccentricities. As one manager summarized, “You gotta make allowances for genius.” Be flexible, and develop a tolerance for off-the-wall behavior. It’s results that count; as long as your peacocks are producing results for you, don’t sweat the small stuff.

• Let your peacocks know how much you value them. They generally need a lot of appreciation and recognition. Let them flash their colorful feathers often. Tell them they are brilliant and beautiful.

• Create a work environment where all types of birds can flourish — peacocks, owls, doves, swans, hawks, and others. Show appreciation for the many different kinds of contributions they make. Play to their strengths. Don’t try to make one type of bird into another. Let them be themselves, and let them know they are valued as unique individuals.

• Provide team training that teaches everyone how to work effectively with others who are different from themselves. We all tend to think our own style is the best, and we can be critical of others who differ from us. Frequent training and ongoing conversations about the value of differences will help keep everyone aware that it would be a boring world, indeed, if we were all alike. Vive la différence!
